Little Free Library

Project and Dedication

Dedication - Sunday, January 17 @ 12:00 pm

Cory United Methodist Church

1117 E. 105th St., Cleveland

Park Synagogue is embarking on a new literacy project—to sponsor two Little Free Libraries and to fill them both with new or gently used books for young children through teenagers.  The Little Free Libraries will both be located at Cory United Methodist Church, with which we are partnering for this project.  Cory is housed in Park’s former synagogue building, called the Cleveland Jewish Center, on E. 105th St. and Grantwood in the Glenville neighborhood. This historic building is the center for many neighborhood activities—from church services to arts classes for kids to a hot meal program at the end of each month to a credit union.  Locating these two Little Free Libraries at Cory will be a wonderful added opportunity for the children from the neighborhood to have their own books to read in their homes.

What is a Little Free Library?  Little Free Libraries are small colorfully decorated wooden structures in the shape of a house filled with books, encouraging children to “Take a Book, Leave a Book.” This grassroots national movement promotes literacy and fosters the love to reading by bringing books to children who don’t have books in their homes.  The Cleveland Little Free Library organization currently has 50 of the little libraries located around the city.  Park is proud to be sponsoring two more of them. Park members helping coordinate this new project are Jane Altshuler, Sandy Ellis, Nancy Hartman, and Carol Koletsky, all members of the Park Social Action Committee.

How can you help?  You can donate new or gently used children’s books for the Little Free Libraries.  We are looking for donations of board books, books for preschoolers, early and intermediate readers, on up to books for young teens and young adults. Please make sure the books are in good condition. There are collection boxes in both Park buildings.  If you prefer to give a monetary donation so we can purchase books on your behalf, please send a check (payable to Park Synagogue) to Little Free Library, Park Synagogue, 27500 Shaker Blvd., Pepper Pike, OH 44124, or donate below.

Join us for the dedication!

On Sunday, January 17, during the Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend, our two congregations will be have a special dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony of the Little Free Libraries at Cory United Methodist Church, 1117 E. 105th St., Cleveland. The dedication will begin at 12:00 noon after the conclusion of Cory's services, and will include refreshments and music by Cory's choir and our very own Park Synagogue Volunteer Choir!

We are providing free transportation from Park East to the dedication, but seats are limited and MUST be reserved in advance. Call Ellen today to reserve your spot!

This will be a wonderful opportunity for our two congregations to come together and celebrate our partnership. Please RSVP to Ellen Petler at epetler@parksyn.org or (216) 371-2244, ext. 122.

One of the Little Free Libraries was decorated by Ilene Rhodes' 4th grade Wolf Religious School class with the help of Park member Jane Altshuler.

The Park Synagogue is a place where every congregant can feel comfortable along his/her own personal life journey. We offer intellectual vigor coupled with the warmth of family. Connecting to others will enhance your connection to Judaism. Whether it is through song or study, through public celebration or private reflection, there is something for everyone at Park. We take seriously the notion that a congregation should bring together people of all ages for a shared experience. We look forward to seeing you here!
