Constitution on Fire: Hate Speech or Free Speech

  • Park Synagogue 27500 Shaker Blvd Pepper Pike United States (map)

Israel’s battle with Hamas has generated a worldwide divide, particularly felt in the United States. And the nation’s college campuses have been laboratories of challenged speech and conduct which have defied certainty about what kind of speech is protected and what is not. We have seen presidents of major universities being questioned by members of Congress about the protests on their campuses after the October 7th invasion of Israel.

Hear Avery Friedman, well-known Cleveland civil rights attorney and law professor, discuss these unresolved issues of free speech vs. hate speech. While a variety of organizations are trying to come up with definitions of anti-Semitism, will the different definitions really answer the question of free speech versus hate speech? All members of Kol Halev, of Park Synagogue, and of the community are welcome to attend this important and timely program. Everyone is invited to a dessert reception following the program.
