Hinenu: Israel at Ten Million is a new photography and oral-history book by photographer and writer David Shlachter that captures Israel through the lives of 100 individuals at the moment the country reached a population of ten million—amid war, political division, and deep national uncertainty.

More than a decade after first living in Tel Aviv, Shlachter returned with his wife and children for a two-year sabbatical, enrolling their kids in public school and committing fully to daily Israeli life. The move coincided unexpectedly with one of Israel’s most difficult chapters, following October 7 and the societal upheaval of the judicial reform crisis. Despite concerns from loved ones, they went anyway.

Searching for a meaningful way to spend this rare stretch of unstructured time, Shlachter began asking a simple but ambitious question: Who is Israel right now? The answer became Hinenu—Hebrew for "Here we are"—a project built around photographing and interviewing 100 people whose demographic profiles mirror Israel’s population at ten million.
